The church of Panagia Theotokos (central church)

The central church of the village which is dedicated to Panagia Theotokos is built in the center of the village among the traditional houses.

The church was built around 1910 and it is cruciform. It is quite big and its capacity is around 300 people.

It is stone made with stones which were extracted from the vicinal village Tochni. The yard of the church is big and paved with slabs. The fencing on the west-south side has many flower gardens and on the east-north there is a baluster. On the east side of the church, outside the sanctuary there is a tall bell tower with arches.

Inside the church there is a beautiful wooden carved iconostasis. The holy icons of the church are also very old but in very good condition as they were restored. Above the iconostasis there is another zone of miniatures of the 12 Apostles and other Saints. Above this zone there is a third one, again with miniatures and above the third zone you can see the Crucifixion of Christ. The iconostasis has three gates: the central Gate, the north (right) Gate and the south (left) Gate. On the right annex of the church there is a beautiful annex and on the left annex there is a despotic throne. The gallery is flat and it is not the usual wooden one.

The church is dedicated to the Nativity of Theotokos which is celebrated on 25 March. Many people visit the church this day every year to pray to Virgin Mary.

The chapel of Archangel Michael

This small chapel was built in the 20th century. On 13th April 1945 the chapel was completed. It is singled aisled church with an inner arch. It is situated on the north side of the village, on a small hill.

It is made of adobes and it is white painted. Its yard is quite big, the floor is cemented and the fencing is composed of a small wall. There is also an entry for the visitors of the chapel. On the west side there is a cemented seat where the priest places the icon of Archangel Michael after the procession. There is no bell tower and its capacity is around 50 people.

The iconostasis of the church is wooden and it has 5 icons. The icons are very old but in good condition as they were restored. The floor of the church is covered with old white slabs. The icon which is dedicated to Archangel Michael is placed on a special iconostasis and it is dated to 1909. There is another icon of the saint which is placed on the iconostasis next to the icon of Virgin Mary and it was painted in 1950 by the nuns of the monastery of Saint George Alamanos.
The icon of Saint George which is placed next to the icon of John the Precursor, on the left side of the temple is very old and it has an important chronological value.

The main entrance of the church is on the south side and it has two windows. There is another door on the north of the church.

The chapel celebrates mass once a year, on 8 November, the feast day of Archangel Michael.

The chapel of Saint George

 On the south side of the village Kalavasos, 3 kilometers outside the village, and on the way to the village Mari you will meet the chapel of Saint George. It is surrounded by wild vegetation.

It is a very small chapel, singled aisled with a big inner arch.

It is made of adobes and it is painted with white paint. The yard is cemented and the fencing is composed of a low wall. There is no bell tower.

The chapel is flat and very simple. There is unique wooden psalter. The iconostasis is simple, wooden and with one central gate. The icons are in very good condition as they were restored. On the right side of the iconostasis there is a special case where the icon of Saint George is kept.

The chapel celebrates mass once a year. On 23 April, the feast day of Saint George, the entire community and visitors from other villages come to the chapel and pray.

The chapel of Saint George Kefala

It is believed that Saint George Kefalas (head) cures headaches and that’s how he got the name Kefalas. The chapel is built 3 kilometers outside the village, on the way to the village Vasiliko.

It was built in 19th century, it is singled aisled with an inner arch, it has tiles on the roof and its form is rectangular. There is nothing special or unique in this church. Its capacity is 30 people. It is stone made, white and its yard is cemented and with no fencing.

In the church you can see a wooden psalter and a wooden iconostasis. There is no gallery. The iconostasis has some old icons, which were made by the monks of the monastery of Stavrovouni. There are 2 gates on the iconostasis: the central and the north. On the right side of the iconostasis there is a small shelf where the icon of Saint George is placed. The icons are dated back in the 19th century. The chapel celebrates mass once a year, on the feast day of the Saint George, on 3 November.

The chapel of Agios Nektarios

The chapel of Agios Nektarios is built on the location Agios Kalogiros. According to an old tradition, on the location Agios Kalogiros there used to be a big cave and above it there was a chapel of Agios kalogiros. The chapel was ruined and in the same place the chapel of Agios Nektarios was bullt in 1970. The chapel was built with the contribution of an inhabitant of the village, who wanted to thank the Saint because he has cured his ill wife. It is situated on the northern of the village. It is very small and its capacity is 15 people.

It was built with bricks and it is white but it has no bell tower. It is single aisled with an inner arch and the roof is covered with tiles. The yard has fencing composed of a low wall and the floor is cemented.

Inside the church there is a wooden iconostasis which has only one central Gate. On the right and left side of the iconostasis there are 3 icons which were made in the monastery of Salamiou in 1987.

The chapel celebrates mass once a year. On 9th November the community of Kalavasos celebrates the feast day of Agios Nektarios with a procession of his icon.

The chapel of Zoodohos Pigi

According to an old tradition, on the location where the small chapel is built, there was a big stone where there was a non-stop flow of water. The chapel was named “Panagia Agiasmatou” but the formal name of it is “Zoodohos Pigi”.

The construction started in December 1969 and it was completed in April 1970. It is a very small chapel and its capacity is 20 people. It is placed eastern of the village (one kilometer outside the village) among the hills of two mountains. It is singled aisled with an inner arch and its form is rectangular.

The chapel is white and when you observe it from afar, it looks like a shinning star among the hills of the mountains. The central entrance of the chapel is on the west side and it is decorated with two big arches. It has also two windows, one on the north side and another on the south side of the chapel.

Inside the church you will see the wooden iconostasis with the simple icons, all made in 1970. On the left side of the iconostasis there is a shelf on which the icon of Zoodohos Pigi is placed. This icon was made in 1964.
The chapel is flat, simple but in good condition. For the conservation of the chapel, the community of Kalavasos organizes fund-raisings.

The chapel celebrates mass once a year. On Friday after Easter the community of Kalavasos celebrates the feast day of Zoodohos Pigi or Panagia Agiasmatou.

The chapel of Lamproforousa Panagia

The old chapel of Lamproforousa Panagia, which was built in 1900, is situated northern of the village (2.5 kilometers outside the village). It is near the chapel of Archangel Michael and it is built on a hill of a mountain. The roof is conered with tiles, it has an inner arch, it is very small and its capacity is 10 people.

The chapel is stone made and white. Its main entrance is on the south side. The yard is quite big but with no fencing.

The inside of the church is very small. The iconostasis is actually a small shelf with just a few icons on. They were made in 1948. It is flat, simple and it does not celebrate mass very often. On the feast day of Archangel Michael after the service, people pass from this small chapel and make their prayers and vows.
