Kalavasos is set to host the 2nd Pancyprian Silk Festival on Friday, 1 May 2026, from 10:00 to 17:00, offering a full-day immersive cultural experience dedicated to the history, art, and living tradition of silk.

Under the theme “The Journey of Silk: From China to Cyprus”, the festival celebrates the deep cultural connection between the two countries, bringing together heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary cultural exchange.

Organised by “To Kamateron”, the initiative aims to revive sericulture and reintroduce the art of silk craftsmanship, preserving a tradition that remains an important part of Cyprus’ cultural identity.

With the participation of the Chinese community and the support of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus and the Kalavasos Community Council, the festival offers a rich programme designed for all ages—blending education, creativity, and live cultural expression.

The event will be honoured by the presence of the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, and the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of China in Cyprus, Mr. Zhou Yunliang, highlighting the importance of this cultural bridge.

Throughout the day, visitors will experience a dynamic and carefully curated programme:

The festival opens with a music programme with DJ, accompanied by a live presentation of silkworms, offering insight into their life cycle and the process behind silk production.

A series of exhibitions will showcase silk works from Cyprus and China, alongside a silk handicraft bazaar featuring handmade creations.

Hands-on engagement plays a central role, with Cypriot and Chinese silk craft workshops for adults, running both in the morning and afternoon, allowing visitors to explore traditional techniques.

For younger visitors, dedicated children’s workshops using silk cocoons and storytelling sessions about silkworms create an educational and engaging experience.

Visitors can also join guided walks through Kalavasos with a local, offering a deeper connection to the village and its heritage.

The cultural programme continues with live performances, including:

  • Chinese martial arts demonstration
  • Tai Chi fan dance
  • Live Chinese songs
  • Official speeches in the central square

The day concludes with further workshops, children’s activities, and storytelling sessions before the official closing of the festival at 17:00.

The Silk Festival is designed as a multi-layered cultural experience, bringing together tradition, education, and live performance—bridging generations and cultures.

All workshops are free of charge, with advance booking required for selected sessions.

Visitors are warmly invited to experience Kalavasos through this unique celebration of silk.
